Spring Cleaning for the Soul: 3 Ways to Declutter Your Mind This March

We spend March scrubbing baseboards and clearing out closets, but when was the last time you took an inventory of what’s lingering in your head?

Just like a physical room, our mental space can get crowded with "clutter"—old habits, self-criticism, and digital noise that no longer serve us. This month, at You Matter Counseling Services, we’re inviting you to put down the spray bottle for a moment and try a different kind of spring cleaning.

Here are three ways to sweep away the mental dust:

1. Unsubscribe from "Mental Junk Mail."

We all have those recurring negative thoughts—the ones that tell us we aren't doing enough or that we should be further along by now.

  • The Clean-up: Treat these thoughts like spam emails. When a self-critical thought pops up, label it: "That’s just junk mail." You don't have to open it, and you certainly don't have to believe it.

2. Clear Your Digital Entryway

In Albuquerque, the spring winds often blow dust into every corner of our homes. Our phones do the same to our brains.

  • The Clean-up: Go through your social media feed. If an account makes you feel "less than," anxious, or exhausted—unfollow. Your digital environment should be a space that inspires you, not one that drains your battery before 10:00 AM.

3. Forgive the "Winter Version" of Yourself

Winter is a season of survival. Maybe you didn't exercise as much as you hoped, or you withdrew from friends. That’s okay.

  • The Clean-up: Let go of the guilt for how you handled the darker months. Sweeping away the "should-haves" makes room for the growth that spring is trying to bring.

A Note from the You Matter Team: Sometimes, the mental clutter feels too heavy to move on your own. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the "dust" of anxiety or depression, we are here to help you sort through it.
